Congratulations! You’re going to shoot a wedding! If you’ve ever dreamed of becoming the next Ansel Adams, or if you just want to take some good pictures at a family event, this is your chance. In this post, we’ll share tips for getting started with wedding photography. Is having a fancy camera enough?Having a good camera does not make you a photographer. The same way that having a piano doesn't make you a musician, or having an oven doesn't make you a baker. The right tool can help you do a job better, but you have to have the skills and the knowledge first. Your new camera should be a step up from the camera on your phone, and it should have manual controls so that you can customize the settings yourself. If possible, borrow or rent a second camera body and two lenses (a wide-angle and a telephoto) for the wedding day. With two cameras in hand, you’ll always have one ready to go and will never miss that crucial moment when the bride walks down the aisle. And because most cameras cannot focus in low light, flash is often necessary for indoor shots — even if it’s just supplementary lighting used to soften shadows on people’s faces. Assist other wedding photographersFirst and foremost, if you have a chance, work with other photographers as an assistant or second shooter. You'll learn so much from watching how they work, and they might even give you some pointers on what they look for when they're shooting. I'm not saying this because I want to steal your secrets, but it's important that we all share what works best for us—this is your chance! If you’re a budding wedding photographer, one of the best ways to learn is by assisting another professional. When you assist, you’ll be responsible for carrying around heavy equipment, setting up lighting setups and taking behind-the-scenes shots of preparation and downtime. After some time assisting, you’ll naturally become familiar with the equipment and standard practices of the industry, which will make it easier for you to shoot on your own. You’ll also have a chance to observe first-hand what makes a good wedding photographer (and what doesn’t), so that you can emulate their success when the time comes for you to lead your own shoots. Attend workshopsSecond, take advantage of any wedding photography workshops that are being offered in your area. These will usually teach you about everything from lighting to posing, and even business practices if you're just starting out. If you're already super busy (and let's face it, who isn't?) try a one-on-one workshop where someone will come to your house and shoot with you while teaching Be a peoples personOf course, you want to take great photos at a wedding. But you also want to be a nice person who doesn’t get in the way of guests or the wedding party. For this reason, it’s usually best to be as inconspicuous as possible during the ceremony itself. Most people don’t appreciate being photographed during an intimate moment like this. After all, it’s not your wedding, so respect the wishes of the couple and their guests by keeping a low profile during the ceremony. That said, there are plenty of other opportunities for photography at a wedding — from the fun of getting ready to the first dance. So don’t worry about missing any shots! Photographing a wedding is one of the most important jobs a photographer can do, it's not just a matter of record-keeping. It's an opportunity to capture the beauty and uniqueness of an event that two people will remember for the rest of their lives. While some photographers do nothing but weddings, for many photographers this is an occasional job that they take on to supplement their income or as a favor for friends. This can be a great learning opportunity for amateur photographers, as it exposes them to new challenges and teaches them how to deal with different lighting situations, venues and people. So you've decided to get serious about being a wedding photographer. Maybe you've already shot your first wedding and it went well, but you want to take your business to the next level. Or maybe you've been photographing for several years and are ready to start charging for your services. Either way, I hope you enjoyed this article.
